YK03 M38 - Black and Blue Male

This male was one of my favorites from the Yellow Koi 03 Spawn.  He was the only male to have a strong black base with blue scales on top.  His fins are so beautiful with the blue against the black, I think he is perfection and I am so happy that he gets a chance for a spawn.

YK03 F77 - Red and Blue Female

This female was picked out of a few that I had left in the sorority tanks from the Yellow Koi 03 Spawn.  She has awesome matching blue stripes in her fins, a great topline, and a strong red base.  I think they will make a wonderful pair!

Aquatic Critters' Spawn

Aquatic Critters, phenomenal betta breeders in San Antonio, grabbed two of the fry from my Yellow Koi 03 spawn last year.  They were drawn to the males striking blue scales on top of the black base, a trait which I've seen repeatedly throughout the past few years with this line that I love but haven't given attention to.  They chose a lovely red and blue female to go with him.  It's been a while since they went to the breeders, and I am so excited to share that they had a successful spawn!  They have agreed to allow me to document their progress here.

Spawning Process

Aquatic Critters conditioned them in separate jars for about a week and a half, feeding them blackworms and bug bites.  Once the female was showing breeding stripes, they released the pair into the spawning box with the female protected in a cup.  The male didn't build a nest right away.  He created a few bubbles and would flare at her, and she seemed interested in him as well.  They released her into the spawning tank on the second day.   His bubble nest would get bigger daily, but the female would only hide in the guppy grass.  On the 3rd day of no spawning they took away the grass so she couldn't hide.  That night they spawned!  The next morning she was removed with minimal fin tears.  The fry hatched after 24 hours.  The male was an attentive father who was diligent to pick up eggs, maintain his nest, and kept the fry from sinking.  He was pulled as soon as the fry were free swimming at 2 days old.
